Since existing Romanian varieties, though fertile, disease resistant and persistent, give rather low forage yields, a broad range of more than 250 genotypes represented in a germplasm collection was taken into account additionally in planning further breeding work. From 1976 onwards, 87 of the families which enter into the composition of the tetraploid synthetic variety Napoca-tetra were assessed for components of seed yield.
