Direct and correlated response to selection for decreased body fat in broilers

Direct and correlated response to selection for decreased body fat in broilers

Poultry genetics and breeding Proceedings of the 18th Poultry Science Symposium, in association with the 25th British Poultry Breeders Round Table, 1983: 113-123

A review, mainly of work on fowls. Breeding programmes for leanness have not been possible until recently because of a lack of suitable techniques for assessing the body fat content of live broiler fowls. However, experimental breeding programmes have now demonstrated the effectiveness of 2 approaches. One method is based on carcass analysis of siblings. A simpler technique measures plasma triglycerides, which are related to fat synthesis and deposition.
