Direct detection of the fireblight pathogen Erwinia amylovora by the pear test using membrane filtration

Direct detection of the fireblight pathogen Erwinia amylovora by the pear test using membrane filtration

Nachrichtenblatt des Deutschen Pflanzenschutzdienstes 38(6): 81-83

A new method is described which does not require the pathogen to be grown on culture media. Material from plants suspected of being infected is shredded and shaken in NaCl solution, from which the bacteria are separated by membrane filtration. Filters bearing bacteria are placed on pear fruit slices which are evaluated after 2-4 d of incubation at 23 degrees C. The appearance of characteristic pale yellow slimy drops denotes the presence of E. amylovora.
