Direct determination of Ca in dried milk by atomic absorption spectroscopy using atomized milk suspensions

2.5 ml of 0.5% polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether (OP) is added to 0.1 g dried milk, and the mixture is made up to 25 ml with water; the suspension is then used for AAS with detection of Ca at 422.7 nm. The method gave a repeatability of 94-102% and CV (15 replicates) of 1.0%. Samples of dried whole milk, infant formula and granulated milk from 5 sources contained Ca at 615-950 mg/100 g.
