Direct drilling: a solution for red rice?

This is a summary of the proceedings of a seminar on direct drilling of irrigated rice organized by Monsanto in Canela, RS in June 1985. Recommendations are made for modification of cultural techniques to reduce the infestation of rice crops by red rice. Design features necessary to ensure efficient direct drilling of rice are listed. Long-term trials on 2 farms in Rio Grande do Sul compared conventional and direct drilling. In 1984 direct drilling increased grain yields by 50%.
