Direct energy substitution and conservation in industrialised agricultural production with particular relevance to New Zealand

The effects of liquid fuel prices and security of supply on agricultural production are discussed. The potential of substituting traditional imported energy supplies with indigenous fuels on the farm is considered. Wood and crop residues could be used to produce low-grade heat. Energy farming to produce alcohol fuel is not currently feasible.
