Direct measurement of irradiance upon phototropic soybean leaves throughout the day

Small solar cells attached to soyabean Corsoy leaflets were used to measure the solar radiation falling on the leaflets throughout the day. Solar radiation falling on 5 fixed plane surfaces was also measured and compared with that falling on the leaflets. Under some conditions the upper leaves received more radiant energy than any fixed plane. Phototropism increased the total radiant energy interception by leaves at the top of the crop canopy.
