Direct seeding: assessing its potential

In a direct sowing trial in South Australia with a variety of species, 4 methods were tested: (a) ploughing, sowing and harrowing; (b) ploughing, spraying with pre-emergent herbicides (Treflan and Avadex , sowing and harrowing; (c) spraying with Vorox AA (atrazine + aminotriazole), ripping, sowing along rip lines 4-6 wk after spraying, and compacting seed and soil by driving tractor wheels along furrows; and (d) grading away the uppermost topsoil (top 35-50 mm), harrowing, sowing and harrowing. Percentage establishment of seed was greatest in (d), least in (a). The use of pre-emergent sprays improved % establishment, with trifluralin more effective than di-allate. Species with small seeds showed poor % establishment in all treatments. Fourteen months after sowing, seedlings in the plot treated with method (c) were up to 45 cm tall, while those in the other treatments were <15 cm.
