In field trials in Hissar in 1974-6, wheat Kalyan Sona was grown in rotation with Pennisetum typhoides HB-3 and NHB-5 and both crops were given 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the recommended rates of 120 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 60 kg K2O/ha in the kharif and 50, 75 or 100% of recommended rates in the rabi seasons. Grain yield of P. americanum was reduced by 6.6-32.5% by reductions of 25 to 75% in NPK rates but straw yield was only reduced by 1.1-3.5%.
