Directed synthesis of tetraploid genotypes

A scheme for the production of tetraploid forms of sugarbeet is described which is based on crosses between forms of different ploidy: (1) hybridization of diploid plants as donors of monogermy with high-yielding tetraploid forms; (2) inbreeding of the triploids obtained to ensure recombination and maximize the possibilities of obtaining monogerm tetraploid recombinants in the progeny; and (3) test crosses to identify those heterozygotes in which segregation of the genotypes required is possible, a process necessitated by the fact that monogermy is a monogenic recessive character.
