Directional selection of high-yielding inbred maize lines under irrigation

Directional selection of high-yielding inbred maize lines under irrigation

Byulleten' Vsesoyuznogo Ordena Lenina i Ordena Druzhby Narodov Nauchno issledovatel' skogo Instituta Rastenievodstva Imeni N I Vavilova (124): 14-18

In a study of 300 lines during 1978-79 in the Chu Valley area of the Kirgiz SSR, close correlations were established between grain yield and the following characters: weight of a single ear (r = 0.92), 1000-grain weight (r = 0.87), number of grains/ear (r = 0.75) and leaf area (r = 0.89). Yield was negatively correlated with duration of growth period (r = -0.47). In the first year, 43 lines were selected on the basis of yield and yield components.
