Gut sac uptake of 45Ca and hosphate in vitro and plasma vitamin D metabolites were studied in rats fed on NaHCO3 for 9 days, and in their pair-fed controls. Duodenal uptake of 45Ca and hosphate by alkalotic rats was less than duodenal uptake by controls. 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-DHD) was much more in alkalotic rats than in their controls and 25-hydroxyvitamin D was slightly more than in controls.
