Immobilization of male Odocoileus virginianus with xylazine hydrochloride alone at 1 mg/kg body weight or followed by caffeine sodium benzoate (10 mg/kg) or yohimbine hydrochloride (0.125 mg/kg) or xylazine at 0.5 mg/kg combined with ketamine hydrochloride at 4.5 mg/kg, reduced dry matter intake by 47%, 36%, 36% and 31%, respectively, in the 24 h after injection. The xylazine/ketamine combination did not adequately sedate the deer.
