Effect of calving interval and dry period on milk yield, fat yield and fat percentage in Holstein-Friesian herds in Castrolanda, Parana State

Data on 2622 lactations in 1973-78 of Holstein-Friesian cows in 29 herds in Brazil were analysed. Calving interval averaged 416 days. It significantly affected (P<0.01) milk yield, with 305-day lactation yield ranging from 4676.9+or-157.2 kg for cows with a calving interval of 300-330 days to 5940.3+or-211.0 kg for those with an interval of 600-660 days. Calving interval also significantly affected milk fat yield (ranging from 162.3+or-5.6 to 208.4+or-7.4 kg), but not fat percentage.
