Effect of feeding alkali treated rice husk on the dry matter consumption and nutrient utilization in crossbred calves

Dry matter consumption, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen use was studied by replacing wheat straw in the ration with different levels of alkali-treated rice husk on 12 animals. Dry matter as well as roughage consumption kg/100 kg body wt did not differ due to incorporation of alkali-treated rice husk in the ration of animals. The digestibility coefficients of CP [crude protein] and EE were increased due to an increase in the amount of rice husk in the ration. N balances were significantly higher in control animals. Treatment of rice husk with alkali increased the TDN [total digestible nutrients] content to an appreciable level.
