Effect of feeding ammonia treated wheat bhoosa as the basal roughage on body weight gain and nutrient utilization in crossbred calves

Crossbred male calves (12) were divided into 3 groups of 4 animals. Group I was fed ammonia treated wheat bhoosa with concentrate; group 2 was offered untreated wheat bhoosa with concentrate equal in weight to group I (negative control) and group 3H was given untreated wheat bhoosa plus concentrate. In all the treatments 10% molasses was impregnated, and sodium sulfate was added in ammonia treated and untreated wheat bhoosa to give N and S ratio of 10:1. Minerals and vitamins A and D3 were also supplemented. Daily body weight gains in treatments 1, 2 and 3 were 356.94 .+-. 41.72, 219.44 .+-. 16.74 and 370.83 .+-. 33.44g, respectively. The digestibility of dry matter was higher in groups 1 and 3 than group 2. The digestibility of crude protein was more in ammonia treated wheat bhoosa ration than treatment 2.
