Effect of nitrogen level and time of application on the protein content and amino acid composition of irrigated wheats

The effect of increasing amounts of urea fertilizer (50, 100, 150 kg/ha) and time of its application on protein content and amino acid composition of 7 wheat cultivars grown under irrigation in the tropics was studied in a factorial experiment. The protein increase that occurred with an increase in applied nitrogen was more marked when the lowest urea level was applied at the grain-filling stage. Compared with tropical grown millets and sorghums, the wheat cultivars had superior essential amino acid composition. Of all the amino acid analyzed, glutamic acid showed the most consistent increase with increase in applied nitrogen while lysine showed the most consistent decrease. The interactions between nitrogen treatments and stage of application were not significant for 4 amino acid.sbd.serine, proline, methionine and phenylalanine. High negative correlations were found to exist between glutamic acid and certain amino acids that are not closely related to glutamic acid in the same proteins.
