In field trials in Rio Grande do Sul in 1979, Pennisetum americanum was either broadcast or sown in rows 50 or 100 cm apart in late Oct., given 0, 100 or 200 kg N/ha and cut 2, 3 or 4 times to a height of 10-15 cm between 30 Nov. and 15 Jan. N increased DM, CP and grain yields, forage CP content and seed vigour. Sowing in rows gave higher DM, CP and grain yields than broadcast sowing. DM and CP yields increased but grain yields decreased with increase in cutting frequency.
