Effect of service period on partial and total milk yield in Holstein-Friesian cows

Revista Cubana de Reproduccion Animal 9(1): 47-57

Data on 2400 lactations of Holstein-Friesian cows in 27 herds were analysed. For cows in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd lactations, service period averaged 183, 148 and 161 days resp., 305-day lactation milk yield 3357, 3778 and 4269 kg, total lactation milk yield 3751, 4096 and 4676 kg, 305-day fat yield 103, 118 and 137 kg, and lactation length 340, 325 and 333 days. Length of service period had a significant effect on 305-day milk and fat yields, total lactation milk yield and lactation length.
