In studies on the effects of rice straw, clear polyethylene film and black polyethylene film mulches on Chinese cabbage, plant growth and soil temperature at 5, 10 and 15 cm depth were highest in plots mulched with clear polyethylene, followed by those mulched with black polyethylene. Soil temperatures were similar in unmulched plots and plots mulched with rice straw. The differences in soil temperature between treatments were greatest during the early growth stages.
