The growth and development of H. contortus from exsheathed infective larvae to adult in API-1 culture medium were investigated with and without bovine haem. Few differences were recorded in growth and development to the 4th stage. The worms developed best (adult males by 19 days) when the medium was supplemented with Fildes' reagent (bound haem, 24 to 96 micro g/ml).
