A survey of Trifolium repens seed harvesting losses on 7 farms in Ellesmere County, Canterbury in 1978 showed that most losses were due to operator skills and machinery. Av. losses were 200 kg/ha of which 130 kg was hard seed. In field trials at Lincoln in 1979-81, losses from cutting ranged from 17 to 59% of harvestable seed (200-540 kg/ha). Use of a rotating finger pickup for swath recovery for threshing reduced cutting losses by 10%.
