Epidemiology of Yersinia enterocolitica infection in a swine herd

Y. enterocolitica was found to be widespread in a non-intensive breeding herd of 800 sows. 163 strains were isolated from rectal swabs from 730 sows and the following serotypes were identified: O:6 (64 sows), O:10 (34), O:5 (32), O:8 (19), O:18 (9) and O:3 (5). Strains were also isolated from diseased piglets and store pigs, mainly of serotype O:3.
