Experimental egg activation in lower dipterans (Psychoda, Smittia) by low osmolarity

International Journal of Invertebrate Reproduction and Development, 83: 175-183

Mature chorionated oocytes dissected from ovaries of the dipterans Psychoda cinerea and Smittia sp. could be activated by brief exposure to de-ionized water, tap water or low osmolarity saline. Under optimal conditions, larvae hatched from nearly 100% of experimentally activated eggs. In Psychoda, the yield of activation decreased with increasing osmolarity of the activating medium; the threshold was near 350 mosmol/litre, well below the osmolarities of Grace's and Robb's tissue culture media.
