Experimental enlargement of the caecum and colon in rats. 2. Regression after long-term ingestion of lactose

Experimental enlargement of the caecum and colon in rats. 2. Regression after long-term ingestion of lactose

Archivos de Gastroenterologia 22(4): 192-195

For 28 days 50 female Wistar rats were given a diet with 25% lactose. For the next 21 days sucrose replaced lactose in the diet. Controls had the diet with sucrose throughout. They were killed on day 28, 30, 32, 35, 42 or 49. Rats given lactose for 28 days gained significantly less weight than did the controls but when sucrose replaced lactose in the diet their weight increased rapidly.
