Experimental establishment of five date palm cultivars in southern Florida

An experimental garden was planted in southerm Florida to evaluate the reaction and adaptability of 5 cultivars of date palm to insect pests and diseases. Although a number of the palms died from unspecified causes during the first year after planting, only a few insect pests were found. These included the cixiid Myndus crudus, a vector of lethal yellowing disease (to which 3 of the test cultivars were susceptible), but it was trapped less frequently on date palms than on nearby coconut palms.
