Experimental evidence for the origin of Solanum tuberosum subspecies andigena

Colchicine-doubled tetraploids obtained from crosses between S. stenotomum and S. sparsipilum (both diploid) closely resembled the natural tetraploid S. tuberosum subsp. andigena in morphology. Autotetraploids of the 2 species, however, resembled their respective diploids. Chromatographic analyses of leaf phenolic compounds showed the absence of certain spots in one or other diploid species that were present in S. tuberosum subsp. andigena.
