Experimental induction of embryogenesis in pear

Somatic embryogenesis was induced in calli raised from excised cotyledons, embryo, root, hypocotyl, stem, leaf and the shoot-tip of aseptically grown seedlings, and petal explants obtained from trees growing in nature, when transfered to Murashige and Skoog's, Nitsch's and White's media supplemented with NAA and BAP in specific concentrations (2 mg/l each). The calli assumed slow growth, became nodular, brownish-green and differentiated into embryoids. Their origin was traced back to single-celled initials which apparently secreted mucilaginous sheath around themselves and became packed with starch grains. The initial divided to form 2-4 cells and finally multicelled structures which were transformed into globular, heart-shaped, or irregular embryoids. The embryoids developed into complete plantlets having root and shoot; but in some instances only root or leaf was formed.
