Experimental infection and diagnosis of swine dysentery, caused by 2 Belgian isolates of Treponema hyodysenteriae

Experimental infection and diagnosis of swine dysentery, caused by 2 Belgian isolates of Treponema hyodysenteriae

Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift 55(5): 328-335

Faecal shedding of treponemes, clinical symptoms and humoral antibody response were evaluated in 10 pigs, experimentally infected with T. hyodysenteriae. Isolate THE appeared to be more virulent than isolate THW, killing 2 of 5 inoculated animals against no mortality in the THW-group. All other animals recovered spontaneously, but some continued to excrete T. hyodysenteriae in the faeces at irregular intervals.
