Experimental infection of the blackfly Simulium takahasii with Brugia pahangi

Experimental infection of the blackfly Simulium takahasii with Brugia pahangi

Japanese Journal of Parasitology, 353: 237-241

Newly-emerged S. takahasii females (less than 8 h old) were fed on 2 B. pahangi-infected Meriones unguiculatus, one with moderate microfilarial density (mfd) of 223 mf/40 ml blood and the other with high mfd of 699 mf/40 ml blood. The flies were maintained at 26 degrees C and examined 1 to 14 days after infection. Live mf of B. pahangi were ingested by 17 of 20 and 15 of 20 flies fed on M. unguiculatus with moderate and high mfd, resp.
