Experimental infection of vampire bats with foot and mouth disease virus

Experimental infection of vampire bats with foot and mouth disease virus

Journal of Wildlife Diseases 22(3): 413-414

Twenty vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) were inoculated intranasally/orally or in the nasal fossae with three strains of aphthovirus types O and A, and saliva samples were collected for up to 25 days. Saliva yielded aphthovirus for 1-9 days after inoculation. One bat died at 9 days and two at 18 days after inoculation.
