An experimental installation with a throughput of 5 t/h for the extraction of protein from alfalfa employs a crusher, fed by a metering conveyor, and an adapted commercial press for extracting juice. Juice is collected in a container under the press and sieved to separate lumpy fibrous particles. It is then pumped to a coagulator, where steam is injected. A slurry tanker is used to act as a flotation and settlement chamber for the separation of protein concentrate.
