Experimental model of weathering of haematite. Application to the optical study of opaque minerals

Experimental model of weathering of haematite. Application to the optical study of opaque minerals

Anales de Edafologia y Agrobiologia 41(1/2): 149-163

The weathering of haematite was studied by incubating the mineral for 15 days in aqueous solutions varying in pH (3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and temperature (30, 60 degrees C), determining the release of Fe into solution, and comparing microscopically the weathered and unweathered mineral particles. Weathering resulted in intense acidification of the solution, especially at the higher temperature.
