One day after feeding a single dose of dehydrated onions to six dogs, the erythrocytes contained large numbers of Heinz bodies reaching a maximum on day 3, and then declining. The turbidity index increased more gradually with a maximum value on day 4. Erythrocytes with haemoglobin contracted to one side of the cell (eccentrocytes) also appeared. Eccentrocytes are believed to result from a direct injury to the erythrocyte membrane.
