Experimental pregnancy toxaemia in sheep and goats

Experimental pregnancy toxaemia in sheep and goats

Indian Veterinary Journal 62(11): 958-963

Hypoglycaemia was induced in 16 sheep and 16 goats by s/c or i/v injection of 5IU plain or protamine zinc insulin per kg body weight. Hypocalcaemia developed after eight hours in sheep and 12 hours in goats with plain insulin and later with protamine zinc. A second injection was usually required to elicit classical clinical signs of ketosis. Six of 16 animals died, the remainder recovering spontaneously or after treatment with glycerol and glucose saline.
