Experimental production of 2n pollen in diploid forms of sugarbeet

Reproductive shoots of the 2x variety Yaltushkovskaya Odnosemyannaya were treated at the flower bud stage for 20 min with ultraviolet light ( lambda = 280 nm) and then selfed. Of 100 second-generation plants analysed, 2 had unusually large pollen grains. At the second division of meiosis in these plants both spindles had a parallel orientation; at anaphase II, 18 chromosomes rather than 9 separated to each pole, resulting in microspore dyads each containing 18 chromosomes.
