Experimental production of apomixis in maize

As a result of crosses between diploid maize (2n = 40) and tetraploid apomictic Tripsacum dactyloides (2n = 72), and backcrosses to maize, 56-chromosome F1 hybrids were obtained during 1966-68. The progeny of these, after crosses with 2x maize, included 56-chromosome unreduced apomicts and 38-chromosome reduced hybrids. When the 38-chromosome hybrids were crossed with diploid maize, the progeny consisted mainly of reduced hybrids with 2n = 20-37 chromosomes.
