Experimental production of bovine and ovine mastitis with a Mycoplasma canadense isolate

Experimental production of bovine and ovine mastitis with a Mycoplasma canadense isolate

Veterinary Record 118(3): 72-73

M. canadense was isolated from the milk of a mastitic cow for the first time in Northern Ireland. A cloned culture of the strain (M128) was injected into a single quarter of a cow in early lactation and into one gland of a suckling ewe. Mycoplasma titres in the milk rose to 1.2 x 108 colonies/ml in the cow and to 3.8 x 108 in the ewe; cell counts also rose, but the infections persisted for only 12 days. In the cow the affected quarter subsequently gave only 10% of the previous yield.
