Experimental salmonellosis in piglets, complicated by balantidiosis and transmissible gastroenteritis

Groups of 4 piglets were inoculated with Salmonella choleraesuis alone (by subcutaneous or nasal inoculation), or in combination with Balantidium or transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) coronavirus. Other groups received other combinations of two or three of these pathogens. Pure Salmonella infection resulted in septicaemia with early death, but the course of illness was more protracted when the other pathogens were also present.
