Experimental studies of sperm transport in sheep, cows and pigs

Experimental studies of sperm transport in sheep, cows and pigs

Veterinary Record 116(7): 188-188

At intervals after mating, the oviducts were transected from the uterus, and double ligatures were placed at the uterotubal junction to prevent further passage of spermatozoa. Eggs flushed from the oviducts at autopsy 1 or 2 days later were examined for fertilization. The results indicated that, in sheep and cows, at least 6-8 h was required after mating for a functional population of spermatozoa to be established in the oviducts.
