Experimental studies on the causes of forest dieback in West Germany

Experimental studies on the causes of forest dieback in West Germany

VDI Berichte (560): 627-656

Growth chamber studies were made on potted 3-5 yr old Norway spruce: on effects of O3 on efficiency of photosynthesis (also studied in 2-yr-old Acer platanoides); on ion flux from needles in the presence of acid mist; and on relations between O3 effects, light intensity, and soil fertility. The occurrence of visible damage symptoms was not simultaneous with the decreases in photosynthetic efficiency that occurred after prolonged exposure to O3.
