Experimental studies on the possible activity of gentian violet in preventing transmission of toxoplasmosis by blood transfusion

Groups of mice were given blood containing 50 000 trophozoites of Toxoplasma gondii which had been incubated in gentian violet at 1:1000 or 1:4000 in a refrigerator (4 degrees C) for 24 or 48 h; other groups of mice received chilled infected blood or gentian violet alone. 6 animals from each group were killed 3, 6 and 15 days later and examined for parasites in the peritoneal fluid and liver as well as hepatic, pulmonary and CNS lesions of toxoplasmosis.
