In analysing the inheritance of quantitative characters, differences in which in the parents depend on the pleiotropic effect of marker genes, segregating populations (BC1, BC2 and F2) can be divided into segregation classes and the arithmetic means (x)and variances (s2) can be calculated for each class. The consequences of selection can then be estimated with or without indicator characters.
