Experiments on pollination with ornamental apples

Experiments on pollination with ornamental apples

Obstbau 11(3): 119-120

Three dessert apple cultivars, all on M.9, were pollinated by the ornamental Hillieri in the open air or under tents, with or without the presence of bees, and the fruit set and yield compared with hand pollinated trees using pollen from Gloster. The highest fruit set for all cultivars was with hand pollination (14-32%). With bees present fruit set was 6.0-8.6% and there were no differences in yield and fruit quality between tented and outdoor trees pollinated by Hillieri.
