Experiments on selection for efficiency of lean growth in pigs

In 2 experiments, pigs were selected for efficient lean growth (ratio of lean gained to feed consumed). In the 1st experiment, pigs were fed ad lib. during performance testing. Compared with non-selected controls, selected pigs had increased carcass lean, lower backfat thickness, lower feed conversion ratio, and a reduced appetite, but showed no difference in growth rate. In the 2nd experiment, pigs were given 162 kg feed during the 12 wk of performance testing.
