Experiments on the energy optimization of forage harvesters

Substantial amounts of energy can be saved in forage harvesting if certain design variables are set at their appropriate levels. A series of tests were made to evaluate the effects of machine variables (such as the number of knives and speed of the cutterhead, compression pressure on the forage material, mat length, feeding depth, and clearance distance between the knife and the shear-bar) on the energy required for chopping lucerne and maize.
