The mineral contents of leaves and soils and vine growth were studied in 21 Kyoho vineyards in 1976 and 1977, with particular reference to controlling berry shatter and increasing the sugar content and yield. Suitable values for various growth, colour, nutrient and fruiting parameters are suggested. The main factors affecting the rate of shatter were internode length and leaf N and Ca contents. The main factors affecting fruit sugar content were leaf N and Mg contents and soil B level.
