The effects of nitrogen fertilizer (at 0, 3 or 4.5 kg/10a) on young Kyoho grapevines (5-10 years) were studied in 1976-82. There was no significant difference between the growth of grapes on vines receiving different rates of nitrogen, but leaf colour and leaf area per vine increased with increasing N fertilizer. Although there was a considerable amount of shatter in vines given no N, climatic conditions seemed to affect this condition more than N fertilizer.
