Sample plots on an area on a reclaimed gravel pit in the German Federal Republic were treated in Dec. 1977 with 400 or 800 msuperscript 3/ha of composted solid waste (4 or 8 cm deep), or left untreated. Pinus nigra was planted in April 1980. One yr later, mortality was heavy on all plots, including controls; a considerable portion was due to rabbit grazing.
