Explosion of vegetable production in Spain: tough competition for glasshouse growers in the South of France

Vegetable cultivation increased considerably in Southern Spain in the late 1970s and within a few years greenhouses, in Almeria for example, covered nearly 10 000 ha; this caused anxiety and fear of intense competition among EC producers of greenhouse crops, namely April tomatoes, particularly in the South of France, where greenhouse tomato production accounted for over half of their turnover.
